Casino drive: ACC launches investigation against 28 people

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched an inquiry against 28 persons in their anti-casino drives, yesterday.

ACC Director General Sayeed Mahbub Khan said among those under investigation, most are government employees of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and the National Housing Authority, and some are businessman.

The ACC high official has however declined to reveal their names.

With this latest investigation, the government's anti-graft watchdog has thus far launched inquiries against a total of 187 people for their alleged involvement in casinos and gambling, Mahbub Khan said.

"If we need to impose a travel ban on them and make some arrests, our designated inquiry and investigating officers will take initiatives," he added.

At a joint meeting of the governing Awami League on September 7, Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina directed the launching of anti-corruption operations inside the party.

Following the premier's statement, the law enforcement agencies arrested Dhaka South Jubo League Organising Secretary Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan on September 18. After Khaled's arrest, police also detained a number of top leaders of Jubo League, Bangladesh Krishak League, and Awami League, in the capital.

On September 20, law enforcement arrested Shamim, popularly known as GK Shamim, for his alleged involvement in tender manipulation and for amassing wealth illegally.
